Slide 1In light of recent terrorist attacks in Paris and California, December’s Community Safety Forum, a joint monthly partnership with The Mob Museum and LVMPD and sponsored by NV Energy, will tackle the particularly relevant topic of emergency preparedness Saturday, December 19, from 1-2 p.m. at the Museum.

Patrick Burke, Metro detective with emergency management, will look at what types of disasters are the top hazards for Clark County, how residents can prepare and the best ways to protect your family, your property, your pets and yourself.

Disasters fall into three categories, Burke says, natural, manmade and technological. Natural hazards include those that affect the environment; manmade are ones that, intentionally or accidentally, threaten the public and technological are disasters associated with critical infrastructure and are typically accidental.

The five top hazards for Clark County include earthquakes, extreme weather, wildfire, pandemic and hazardous materials. Four points make southern Nevada particularly vulnerable to disasters, Burke notes:

  • We do not grow any food here.
  • We only have a three-day food supply.
  • The main fuel line originates in California and could be compromised.
  • There could be a delay in government assistance.

As part of the presentation, Burke will share ideas on emergency preparedness planning including:

  • Water, food and medical plans
  • Family and neighborhood planning and
  • How to put these plans into action.

Free Admission to The Mob Museum following the event to guests attending Community Safety Forums sponsored by NV Energy. Also thanks to NV Energy’s generous support, The Mob Museum will provide live streaming of the presentations on our website.
